Congress slams govt over appointment of Chief of Defence Staff

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress has questioned the government over the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff(CDS), minutes after theannouncement was made.

Congress MP from Punjab's Sri Anandpur Sahib Manish Tewary has said in a tweet that the government has started on a "very wrong footing".

"With great regret and fullest of responsibility may I say that the Govt has started on a very wrong foot with regard to CDS. Time alone, unfortunately, will reveal the implications of this decision," Manish Tewari tweeted.

Earlier, Congress had slammed General Bipin Rawat for questioning violent-CAA protests.

In an event in Delhi, Rawat had said: “Leadership is all about leading... Even amongst the crowd you find leaders emerge. But leaders are those who lead people in the right direction. Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate directions, as we are witnessing in a large number of universities and college students.

“The way they are leading masses of crowds to carry out arson and violence in our cities and towns. This is not leadership.”

Senior Congress leaders and Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram, who is out on bail in INX media case, said "Mind your own business" to General Rawat while addressing a rally in Kerala on Congress' foundation day, last week.

"Now, the Army General is being asked to speak up. Is it the job of the Army General?" Chidambaram had said.

He even alleged that senior government officials like DGP of UP Police and Indian Army chief have been asked by the government to speak in its support.

"The DGP, the Army General are being asked to support the government. It is a shame. Let me appeal to General Rawat. You head the Army and mind your business... what politicians will do, politicians will do."

Further, in a series of tweets Tewary has questioned the appointment of CDS over the functioning and powers of the post, including the future ramifications.
