New Delhi, Feb 9 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi found himself in the middle of another controversy as a police complaint has been filed against him for calling Hindutva icon and freedom fighter Veer Savarkar a "coward".

Rahul recently reportedly said Savarkar pleaded to the British during colonisation period to get freedom after he was arrested in 1911.

However, the statement has not gone down well by Savarkar's family.

Lodging a police complaint, Savarkar's grandnephew, Ranjeet, said Rahul made false statement as the freedom struggle icon had served 27 years in jail.

In November last year at a Chhattisgarh rally Rahul had made similar comments against

During his speech, Rahul Gandhi as quoted in media said “Do not teach us patriotism, there is a list of martyrs in Congress party. When our leaders were fighting with British when our leaders were serving the jail term for 15-20 years, at that time your Savarkarji bowed down before the Britishers and with folded hands, he had been apologising to the Britishers. You should not teach patriotism to the Congress party."

Though Savarkar was not a member of RSS, the ideological patron of the ruling BJP and Congress bete noir, Rahul would often rake up his name to attack the saffron brigade.
