Compensation to kin of farmers who died during agitation a state matter: Agriculture Minister
New Delhi/UNI: Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday told the Rajya Sabha that the matter of compensation to farmers who died during the year-long farmers' protests was with the state governments, and said no one was killed in police action during the protests.
In a written reply to a question, the Minister was asked whether the government was making any provisions for the livelihood or compensation to the next of kin of the farmers who died during the agitation.
"The subject of compensation to the families of deceased ryots in the farmers movement is with the concerned State Governments. No farmer died as a result of police action during the farmers' agitation," Tomar said.
The farmer groups, under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), have announced that their protest at Delhi borders and other places will be withdrawn on Dec 11 as an agreement was reached between the farmers and the Union government.
According to farmer groups, around 700 peasants died during the protests that went on for over a year.
The three farm laws were repealed by Parliament on Nov 29, the first day of Winter Session.
