Commonwealth Scam: Delhi HC sends five people to jail

New Delhi, Sept 2 (IBNS): In its first sentencing in the 2010 Commonwealth scam, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday sent five people to jail.

According to reports, four civic officials have been sent to jail for four years and the managing director of a private firm, Sweka Power Tech Engineers, TP Singh, has been sentenced to six years of imprisonment.

The convicts had reportedly pleaded for a lesser term since they argued that they had spent around 11 months in jail during the trial.

According to a CBI chargesheet in 2011, the convicts entered into a criminal conspiracy for upgrading street lights for the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

They awarded the contract to a private firm by manipulating tender documents.

The scam caused a loss of over Rs.1.42 crore to the government, the CBI had said.
