Citizenship Amendment Bill: NE allies of BJP to meet in Guwahati

Guwahati, Jan 28 (IBNS): Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Nitish Kumar-led JD (U) and six other BJP allies in the North Eastern region have decided to jointly fight against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.

The regional parties in the region which are in alliance with the BJP will meet in Guwahati on Tuesday to discuss the controversial bill, which would likely to be placed in Rajya Sabha in the coming Budget Session.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Assam’s regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are taking the lead role to organise the convention to be held in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and his party Mizo National Front (MNF), Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio-led Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Tripura’s Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and NPP leaders of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur will take part in the convetion.

“AGP and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have called the convention to protest against the bill. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and president, leaders of several political parties of the region will take part in the convention. Massive protests are going on in entire the region against the bill,” Atul Bora said.

On Monday, a delegation team of JD (U) led by its general secretary K.C. Tyagi arrived in Guwahati. The JD(U) team has promised to extend their support to the AGP in view of their protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

“JD (U) is also opposed the bill and we are with the AGP and the people of Assam. We also extended our support to the meeting called by the AGP tomorrow,” Tyagi said.
