Chief Secretaries of Assam-Nagaland agree to defuse Inter-state border tension
During a Chief Secretary level meeting between the two neighbouring states held in Guwahati on Nov 17, the two states had agreed to defuse the tense situation in the bordering areas.
The meeting was held in pursuance of the decision taken during the meeting of the Union Home Minister with the Chief Ministers of both the states on Oct 27 at New Delhi.
In presence of the Chief Secretary of Assam Jitesh Khosla and his Nagaland counterpart Toshi Aier, the Principal Secretary of Home & Political department of Assam M.G.V.K. Vanu briefed the meeting about the prevailing law and order situation subsequent to the incident of Nov 13 at Uriam Ghat area in Golaghat district where one person was killed and three others injured by miscreants, suspected militants while harvesting crops in the area.
The incident had also resulted in nearly 200 persons seeking shelter in relief camps at Uriam Ghat.
After discussion, both sides agreed to make all efforts for creation of conducive atmosphere for restoration of harmonious relations among the people and for the safe and early return of the displaced people to their respective villages.
The government of Nagaland was also requested for assistance to apprehend the culprits alleged to be responsible for the incident.
During the meeting, it was reiterated that such mischievous elements should not be allowed to create misunderstanding among the people living in border areas.
It was also agreed to intensify point-to-point contact of Border Magistrates, share information and strengthen the deployment of central forces.
Discussions took place in a very cordial atmosphere with both the Chief Secretaries agreeing to take all steps to defuse the tension and maintain peace in the area along the inter-state border and ensuring that local disputes are dealt with speedily and are not linked with the border related issues between the two States which are currently under the consideration of the Supreme Court.
