New Delhi, Oct 20 (IBNS): Former Union finance minister and Congress leader, P. Chidambaram, on Friday took a dig on the Election Commission of India over the delay in the announcement of the dates for Gujarat assembly election.

The former finance minister took to Twitter to literally mock the Election Commission for keep a hold on the announcement of the poll dates in Gujarat.

In the first tweet, Chidambaram said: "EC will be recalled from its extended holiday after Gujarat Govt has announced all concessions and freebies."

"EC has authorised PM to announce date of Gujarat elections at his last rally (and kindly keep EC informed)" he said in a follow up tweet.

The back to back tweets from the senior Congress leader has invited some comments form the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), prompting the latter to say the Congress is scared of the upcoming Gujarat assembly election.

The Election Commission of India has so far did not announce the poll dates in the state.

The election in the state is scheduled to take place by the end of this year.

The BJP is in power in Gujarat since 1995.

In a recent rally conducted in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was also the chief minister of the state till 2014, said: "I bow to the people of Gujarat for blessing BJP for decades. We will always fulfil the dreams of every Gujarati with full strength & vigour."

The principal opposition party, the Congress, has already alleged the BJP of pressuring the Election Commission to delay the announcement of the poll dates in the states to facilitate Modi to offer some benefits to the people just few days before the election.
