Chennai and suburbs under 'red alert' over prediction of heavy rains

Chennai/IBNS: The authorities have issued a red alert for 20 districts for the next 48 hours, as heavy rain between 150 and 200 mm is likely to lash Chennai starting this afternoon as a depression over the Bay of Bengal moves to north Tamil Nadu.

People have been advised to not venture out of their homes and store enough food and charge all electronic devices for communication.

Arrangements have been made for the distribution of food and generator sets (for electricity supply), and to meet other infrastructure needs are also ready, Greater Chennai Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi told NDTV.

There will be no sudden release of water from Chembarambakkam (as in 2015), he said, adding that 2,000 cusecs is being released.

A total of 169 relief centres are operational, and floods have been cleared in 216 of around 400 areas.

Tamil Nadu has received 46 percent excess rain so far, as compared to the historical average.
