Chennai airport resumes flight operations after 4 days
Chennai, Dec 6 (IBNS): After being shut down for four days due to excessive water-logging as a result of flood in Tamil Nadu, Chennai Airport on Sunday resumed commercial flight operations.
The Chennai airport was shut on Tuesday evening due to excessive water-logging.
The first flight to take off from the Chennai airport was a chartered plane.
After that, an Air India flight with 150 passengers on board took off for Port Blair.
Private player Jet Airways announced that it will resume partial flight operations to Chennai on Sunday.
"Flight 9W 2352 on ATR aircraft will depart from Bangalore at 1710 hrs and arrive in Chennai at 1805 hrs. On the return leg, flight 9W 2757 will depart from Chennai at 1840 hrs and arrive in Bangalore at 1950 hrs. Due to infrastructure constraints at Chennai airport only hand baggage will be allowed on flight 9W2757 departing Chennai," the company said in a statement.
Jet Airways informed that it is working closely with airport authorities to plan for operating its full flight schedule from Chennai.
A decision regarding round-the-clock flight operations will be taken by the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
However, parts of the city are once again receiving rainfall on Sunday, reports said.
The Met department has predicted moderate rainfall for the day.
Train services also resumed in the morning after being halted for four days.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh had, on Thursday, said that there had been 269 deaths in Tamil Nadu since the heavy rain and flooding began last month. More than 10,000 people have been rescued so far by the Army and the National Disaster Response Force.
Schools, colleges and offices in Chennai have been forced to close and exams have been postponed. Telecom companies have offered free talk-time to their customers. Mobile phone services have been partially restored.
Electricity has also been restored in some parts of the city.
With water receding, municipal workers have launched a huge cleaning operation all over Chennai.
