Kolkata, July 21 (IBNS): Senior journalist and two-time Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra on Saturday joined the Trinamool Congress, days after he quit the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Three other important personalities- former CPI(M) MP Moinul Hasan, Congress leader Sabina Yasmin and Mizoram Advocate General Biswajit Deb also joined the party.

Mitra's joining the TMC was formally announced at the party's annual mega rally, organised to observe the Martyrs' Day.

The rally, which has West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee as the sole attraction, is underway in central Kolkata's Esplanade area.

Mitra, who was considered an important functionary of the BJP at the national level, had unsuccessfully contested the 2016 West Bengal assembly election from the Hooghly constituency on a BJP ticket.

Mitra submitted his resignation to BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday.

Moinul Hasan, once an important functionary of the CPI(M)  recently quit the CPI(M) following differences.
