Centre hikes Dearness Allowance for Central govt employees from 17 pc to 28 pc from July 1

New Delhi/IBNS: The Union Cabinet has cleared the proposal of giving Central government employees and pensioners Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hike with effect from July 1, 2021.

The proposal will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting this afternoon and if approved the allowances will be given prospectively and disbursed from September.

The government is likely to raise the Dearness Allowance from the existing 17 per cent to 28 per cent, according to sources, said an NDTV report.

The proposal for hiking Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief was cleared by the Joint Council Machinery for Central Government Employees (JCM) headed by the Cabinet Secretary, last week.

Various government employees' unions had demanded prospective payment of DA and DR dues from the Centre, said the report.

The JCM comprises representatives of recognised Central Government employees union as well as senior Central Government officials.

The proposal was cleared during a meeting held on June 26 between Finance Ministry and officials of the Department of Personnel and Training.

The DA and DR are due for four periods - January 1, 2020, July 1, 2020, January 1, 2021 and July 1, 2021.

The Centre had decided to hold the Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief from January 1, 2020 till July 2021 in April last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the consequent rise in expenditure.
