Centre calls emergency security review meeting ahead of draft NRC publication in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 21 (IBNS): Ahead of the draft publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the Centre has called an emergency security review meeting on October 23 next.

A top official of the Assam home department said that, the centre has called the security related review meeting with the top officials of the state home department, Assam police and other security agencies including Intelligence Bureau (IB) on October 23 in New Delhi.

Recently, the IB alerted the Union home ministry, Assam home department and Assam police that, some foreign assist elements are trying to create disturbance situation in the state ahead of draft publication of NRC.

Ahead of the draft publication,state coordinator for the NRC presently updating the 1951 list under the supervision of the apex court to detect undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh, Prateek Hajela, had submitted a report before the Supreme Court on October 12 and mentioned that, out of 47.09 lakh applicants who have submitted Panchayat certificate to get included in NRC, 17.40 lakh were original inhabitants.

The top official of the state home department said that, Assam police and other security agencies have monitored the situation and arranged adequate security measures across the state to prevent any untoward situation.

On the other hand, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay said that, Assam police has taken the matter very seriously and all possible measures have been taken up.

The SC asked the state coordinator office for the NRC to publish the draft NRC on December 31 next.

Meanwhile, following the report submitted by the state coordinator for the NRC before the SC, several organizations and persons had spread out false information in the muslim community dominated areas in the state that, most of muslim people wouldn’t able to enter their names in the NRC.

On the other hand, All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) has urged the state coordinator for the NRC and other higher authorities not to use the original inhabitant tag on the update process of the NRC until the SC delivers verdict on the issue.
