New Delhi, May 9 (IBNS) : In a rare case of a sitting judge being convicted by fellow judges, the Supreme Court on Monday sentenced Justice CS Karnan of Calcutta High Court to six months jail holding hi guilty of contempt and ordered the Kolkata police chief to arrest him, reports said.

"If we don't send Justice Karnan to jail then there will be a blemish that SC condoned contempt by a judge," a 7-judge bench headed by CJI J S Khehar said.

The 61-year-old judge, who virtually rebelled against the top judiciary of the country, was accused of contempt after he named 20 "corrupt judges" of the country earlier this year.

He sought an investigation alleging corruption in the judiciary. He also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging an inquiry.

On being repeatedly summoned by the Supreme Court, that suo moto initiated a contempt case against him, Justice Karnan refused to show up.

Instead he held "home court" at his residence  matching every Supreme Court order with one of his own.

Last week, the Calcutta High Court judge had turned away a team of psychiatrists who had arrived along with the police for a medical examination ordered by the top court.
