Calcutta HC refuses to intervene in Mamata Banerjee's Durga puja dole

Kolkata, Oct 10 (IBNS): In a win for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to intervene in West Bengal government's announcement of Rs 10 lakh each as a grant to all Durga puja committees across the state, media reports said.

The government had said it will spend Rs 28,000 crore in total for the puja disbursement.

In the court, the state has argued that the order was an executive one and the judiciary has no right to interfere in it.

Acknowledging the state's argument, the high court refused to put a stay on the puja dole, which sparked political row in the eastern state.

Earlier, the court had issued an interim stay on the government order till Tuesday.

Last week, Mamata had said the grants have already been given to the puja committees.
