Bengaluru/UNI: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC was clamped in Karnataka as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order as various political parties and organisation had planned to stage dharna, demonstration and protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Order clamped with immediate effect will be in force till December 21 midnight from 0600 hrs on Thursday, City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao announced at a press conference convened last night.

Rao said that under the Order permission will not be given to any organisation, political parties to hold demonstration or any sort of agitation against CAA passed in the Parliament recently. The order prohibits holding demonstration, assembly of more than five people, carrying lethal weapons, arms etc., and indulge in activities that disturb peace in the society.

Meanwhile, Left parties--CPM, CPI had given a call for holding demonstration in protest against the CAA in the City.

Authorities of respective Districts have issued orders last night about imposition Prohibitory orders and warned organisatioins and political parties against violation of orders.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amar Kumar Pandey, announcing the ban, said that the ban was imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. There were requests received by some organisations to celebrate the Act. More than 50 organisatioins in the City alone had sought permission and it will be denied under the Prohibitory orders and permission already granted will be cancelled since the order has come in to effect with immediate effect, Pandey added.

However, several organisations, taking strong exception to imposition of Prohibitory orders, have announced to go ahead with their plan to stage protest.

Taking strong exception to imposition of Prohibitory orders, former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Dr G Parameshwara said "imposition of Section 144 in Bengaluru without any threat of violence isagross abuse of powerby the state government."
