Lucknow/Mumbai, May 31 (IBNS): In a setback to the saffron outfit, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trailing in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur Assembly seats, where by-polls were held on Monday, media reports said.

Both the seats were held by the BJP earlier and the elections are also seen as a test of Opposition unity against the saffron party in the run up to 2019 polls. .

While the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) is leading in Kairana Lok Sabha seat, former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) has taken a lead in the Noorpur Assembly seat.

By-polls were necessitated in Kairana owing to the death of candidate Mriganka Singh's father, BJP MP Hukum Singh, in February. The death of a BJP legislator also necessitated a bypoll in Noorpur Assembly seat.

However in Maharashtra, the BJP is leading in both Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha seats, upsetting the Shiv Sena.

In Kerala, the CPI-M is leading in Chengannur Assembly seat.

According to the latest trend, the Janata Dal (United) is leading in Bihar's Jokihat Assembly seat.

Continuing its dominance in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is on the verge of sweeping the Maheshtala Assembly constituency.

The Congress is leading in Karnataka's RR Nagar and Meghalaya's Ampati Assembly seats.
