BSP leaders join Congress in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow, Mar 4 (UNI): The Uttar Pradesh Congress received another shot in the arm, when former Bahujan Samaj Party Member of Parliament (MP) from Sitapur, Kaiser Jahan and her two times MLA husband, Jasmir Ansari joined the party, along with their supporters, here on Monday.
The couple, who expressed faith in the leadership of party president Rahul Gandhi and the policies of Congress, made the official entry into the party here, in the presence of state party president Raj Babbar, Spokesperson of UPCC Brijendra Kumar Singh said.
Welcoming them into the party fold, Mr Babbar said Congress will form the government at the Centre after winning the coming Lok Sabha polls.
''Our government will ensure the rights of the youth, farmers, labourers and traders, and pave the way for establishing an atmosphere, in which all could feel safe and secure,'' he added.
Ms Jahan and Mr Ansari had earlier met AICC In-charge of UP-East Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi, Mr Singh said. Retired IPS officer Aftab Ahmed Khan and Chamber of Commerce Vice-Vhairman Surendra Kumar also joined the Party, he added.
Earlier, the party's morale was boosted, when Savitri Bai Phule, BJP MP from Bahraich reserved constituency in Eastern UP, who had resigned from BJP in December last year, alleging that the party was playing 'divisive politics' and was 'misusing money to construct temples and statues', joined the Congress on Saturday evening.
Interestingly, as she was a sitting MP of the ruling party, her joining was made in the presence of party president Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretaries In-charge of Eastern and Western Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia, respectively in New Delhi.
With the BJP MP joining Congress, the party has got a strong Dalit grassroots leader for Eastern Uttar Pradesh, who is vocal and has the capacity to hold rallies on her own and gather decent crowd in the areas surrounding Bahraich.
Besides Ms Phule, former MP from Fatehpur and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Rakesh Sachan also joined the Congress the same evening.
The party is now further looking towards smaller parties and individual leaders of significance in Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh to join them, so that they could able to find potential candidates in majority of the 80 Lok Sabha seats and win at least the same number of seats, which they won in 2009.
