BSF recovers gold worth Rs 35 lakh from arrested smuggler

Kolkata, Apr 14 (IBNS): The Border Security Force on Monday succeeded in its second gold seizure in a couple of days in West Bengal by nabbing a smuggler with 1.18 kg gold, the border guards said.


This is the third seizure by Kolkata sector of  BSF in recent times, the force said in a statement.

Asanur Gazi, an Indian national and resident of Darkhanda near  Swarupnagar police station in North 24 Parganas was carrying four gold bars worth Rs 35 lakh when he was apprehended by the troops of Border Outpost (BOP) Bithari, 152 Battalion, BSF.

He has been handed over to local custom authorities along with seized gold.

According to BSF, on a tip off informing of a gold consignment to be smuggled across borders and its subsequent delivery at Swaupda via motorcycle en route Kolkata, the 152 BN BSF troops hatched an operation to nab the smuggler with the consignment with help from troops of BOP Bithari.

Noticing a Bajaj Pulsor bike at about 0715 hrs, BSF troops intercepted the bike rider and foiled its attempt to escape.

The motorcycle as also seized.

Kolkata Sector BSF has recovered approximately 24 kg gold in the last 6 months worth Rs 7.20 crore  and apprehended 15 Indians and one Bangladeshi gold smugglers under the command of  I. D. Sharma, DIG, Kolkata Sector. On April 12, gold worth Rs. 82 lakh was recovered by BSF, apprehending two smugglers.
