BREAKINGNEWS: Actor Irrfan Khan dies in Mumbai hospital

Mumbai/IBNS: Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, who was admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital with a colon infection, died on Wednesday, sources confirmed. He was 53. He left behind his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two children-Babil Khan and Ayan Khan.

The Piku actor lost his mother, Saeeda Begum, earlier this week, and could not attend her funeral in Jaipur due to the nationwide lockdown.

The actor was unwell and unable to attend the funeral because of the lockdown.

Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 after which he left for London to get treated. On recovering from the illness, he returned to India in 2019.

After a long hiatus, the actor made his comeback in Angrezi Medium, which released in theatres just few days before the nationwide lockdown was announced.

He had acted in films like Slumdog Millionaire, Salaam Bombay!, Maqbool, The Namesake, The Lunchbox among many others where he was loved by the masses besides receiving critical acclaim.

"This is the most disturbing and sad news," tweeted Amitabh Bachchan as the news broke.

One of the important actors of contempory Indian cinema, he had worked in British films and Hollywood in a career spanning almost three decades.

He acted in more than 50 Indian films and won many awards.

He was born in Jaipur in a Muslim Pashtun family. His parents were Begum Khan Jagirdar Khan.

He was studying for an MA degree when he earned a scholarship to make it to the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1984.
