BJP trying to subvert democracy in Karnataka: Yashwant Sinha
New Delhi, May 17 (IBNS): Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party over the issue of government formation in Karnataka and said it is 'brazenly trying to subvert democracy' in the southern state.
Speaking on the Karnataka and the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, former BJP leader Sinha tweeted: "I am glad I have left the party which is so brazenly trying to subvert democracy in Karnataka. It will do the same if it fails to get majority in Lok Sabha next year. Pl note my warning."
Sinha quit BJP recently.
BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa is all set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Thursday.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at around 9 am.
Upsetting the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) combine, the Supreme Court has orally refused to stay BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa's swearing-in ceremony.
The Congress-JD(S) had filed a petition against Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala's decision to invite Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa to take oath.
With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announcing that BS Yeddyurappa will take oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, the Congress party had approached the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing.
A bench of Justice AK Sikri, Justice A Bobde and Justice Ashok Bhushan has heard the case.
Ex-Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi defended the BJP and Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was advocating the union government in the case, report said.
Meanwhile, ex-Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram attacked Yeddyurappa and and tweeted: "I salute the Supreme Court. If I were Mr Yeddyurappa, I will not take oath until the hearing at 10.30 am on Friday, 18th May."
"Mr Yedyurappa's letter to the Governor will seal his fate. There is no mention of a number bigger than 104. The Governor's invitation does not mention any number at all!," he said.
In a major political turn, the Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday evening announced that its leader BS Yeddyurappa will be taking oath as the chief minister of the south Indian state on Thursday after governor Vajubhai Vala invited the party to form government.
The Governor gave BJP a period of 15 days to prove majority, said reports.
In an argument inside the top court, Singhvi said 15 days time to prove majority is "encouraging constitutional sin of poaching".
Countering Singhvi, Rohatgi said the court can't stop a Governor from performing his act.
However, the court did not say anything regarding the time period to prove the majority.
BJP had won 104 seats in the Assembly polls.
