BJP trying to divide Muslim families with Triple Talaq bill: Mehbooba Mufti

| @indiablooms | Dec 31, 2018, at 03:29 pm

Srinagar, Dec 31 (IBNS): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday criticised the Triple Talaq Bill and hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party by saying that it is attempting to divide Muslim families.

"After creating division on religious and sectarian lines, BJP , now wants to divide Muslim families through Triple Talaq bill. With economic onslaught on Muslims through curbs on meat and leather, the social crisis TT bill can cause , will impoverish them further," Mufti tweeted.

"Muslims pride themselves for strong family structure and bonding . Same is true of other religions in the East , which is considered as an advantage over the Western culture .This bill is a direct assault on that," she siad.

"Indian Muslims and we from jk which is a Muslim majority state , decided to stay with Gandhi's secular democratic India and let us not convert it into Zia-ul-Haq's nation," she said.

The Peoples Democratic Party head further said: "Democracy is not run through brute majority, it is about consensus . Muslims accepted the decision of SC on invalidity of Triple Talaq , unlike the Sabarimala verdict . Best is to empower Muslim women to be able to face the world independently in case of a breakup."

The Bill was stalled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday after opposition leaders demanded the formation of a select committee to scrutinise it.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday with 245 voting in favour of it and 11 against. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which runs the central government, does not have the majority in the Rajya Sabha.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till Jan 2 on Monday.

In the monsoon session of Parliament, the Union cabinet had cleared the amendment to the triple talaq bill with the approval for making provision for granting bail to men found guilty of declaring instant divorce to their wives.

The provision for bail was incorporated following demands raised by the opposition parties. Magistrates can now grant bail to the accused.
