BJP, NPF likely to form next government in Nagaland

Kohima, Mar 3 (IBNS): After a comprehensive win and dethroning of the 25-year-old Left Front government in Tripura, the Bharatiya Janata Party is now prepared to form government in Nagaland again by forming an alliance with the ruling party Naga People’s Front (NPF).

After the poll result was declared, Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang gave a proposal to BJP that NPF was ready to form a new government in the state with the BJP if  the saffron party came forward for a post-poll alliance.

Minister of State for Home and BJP leader Kiren Rijiju reflecting upon Zeliang’s proposal said that BJP will go with the ruling NPF if no majority with the pre-poll ally party NDPP is reached.

While the two BJP ministers are still in the Zeliang-led government the saffron party has dumped its 15-year old alliance partner NPF in Nagaland and forged with newly formed political party Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) led by three times former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

But the political scenario has been dramatically changed in Nagaland after the poll results were declared.

In the final result of the Nagaland assembly poll, BJP has won 12 seats, NDPP won 17, 27 by NPF, 2 by NPP and one each by JD (U) and Independent.

With this result, BJP and NDPP alliance bagged 29 seats while NPF-NPP-JD (U) alliance bagged 30 seats.

If BJP to go with NPF to form a new government then the total strength of the BJP-NPF-NPP-JD (U) will be increased to 42 and strength of BJP and NPF to be increased to 39.

On Saturday, Nagaland CM Zeliang said that BJP is the alliance partner of NPF and his party is ready to form the next government in Nagaland with BJP.

Zeliang virtually ruled out any alliance with Neiphiu Rio led NDPP.
