BJP goes to Supreme Court on West Bengal rallies
Kolkata, Dec 24 (IBNS): The BJP filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on Monday seeking an urgent hearing against a Calcutta High Court order that has denied permission to the party to hold its "Save Democracy" yatras just yet, reports said.
The party had planned to start the rallies from various parts of the state and converge in Kolkata. Party president Amit Shah was to flag them off.
The Calcutta High Court on Friday set aside its own order permitting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s 'Ganatantra Banchao (Save Democracy) Yatra' in West Bengal.
Challenging the single-bench verdict, the West Bengal government, which had earlier denied permission owing to security reasons and apprehensions of communal disharmony, had appealed to the division bench.
The division-bench has asked the single bench to consider the intelligence inputs on the matter by state agencies.
The BJP has planned to take out three yatras from Cooch Behar, Namkhana and Tarapith covering all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the eastern state of India.
The yatra has led to a major face-off between the BJP and ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) with few months to go before the 2019 general elections.
