Bangalore, Mar 5 (IBNS): The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday made a sensational claim on its Twitter page where it posted a video of a Congress leader who called for the assassination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP said Belur Gopalakrishna made the claim during a party function recently.

"Belur Gopalakrishna, a Congress leader in a official party function calls for assassination of democratically elected PM Sri @narendramodi ji. Instigating for assassination of PM of a country is a nation threat & we urge @HMOIndia, @CPBlr to impose legal action immediately," BJP Karnataka tweeted.

The official Twitter page of the BJP reacted to the video and commented: "Shameful words by a Congress leader."

The Congress leader later defended his statement.

"My words have been taken out of context. I don't know why the BJP is bringing this up now. There are people who support Godse, they are praising Godse, I was questioning them. I am not saying that people should assassinate the PM," the leader was quoted as saying by Bangalore Mirror.
