BJP candidate attacked, escapes unhurt during 6th phase of LokSabha election in Bihar

Patna, May 12 (UNI) An estimated 59.38 per cent voters exercised their franchise during the 6th phase of Lok Sabha election in Bihar even as BJP candidate from West Champaran Sanjay Jaiswal`s bodyguard opened fire to ward off an attack by a mob laced with wooden sticks allegedly having links with a particular party.

After the conclusion of 6th phase of election, state chief electoral officer H R Srinivas told newspersons that the mob tried to attack BJP candidate from West Champaran Jaiswal when he reached at polling booth number 162 at Bankatwa village under Narkatia block area of Sikrahana subdivision in East Champaran district, falling under West Champaran Lok Sabha constituency.

He said that the MP`s bodyguard opened fire in the air and escorted him to a room safely. He said polling continued at the polling booth even after the stipulated time frame to compensate time loss due to the disturbance.

The additional director general of police (Headquarters) Kundan Krishnan said that lathi-wielding miscreants tried to attack Mr Jaiswal as his bodyguard opened fire in the air to scare them.

He said that Jaiswal had reached the polling booth when he was informed by somebody that his supporters were not being allowed to cast their votes.

He said MP escaped unhurt in the incident even as the body guard claimed that he opened fire it to save MP from the mob fury.

In another incident, a polling official identified as Shivendra Kishore (34) was killed when a bullet misfired from the rifle of a Home Guard Saryug Das hit him at polling booth number 275 under Sheohar assembly segment in Sheohar Lok Sabha constituency. The mishap took place when Home Guard was adjusting the butt of his rifle.

"It was a case of accidental firing," CEO added.
