BJP Bengal President Dilip Ghosh allegedly assaulted in Darjeeling

Kolkata, Oct 5 (IBNS): West Bengal President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Dilip Ghosh claimed that he and few of his companions were beaten up by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists and the followers of expelled Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Binoy Tamang in Darjeeling hills on Thursday.

According to reports, Dilip Ghosh was holding a party meeting in central Darjeeling on Thursday afternoon when protesters intervened  and forced BJP leaders to postpone the meeting.

BJP leaders alleged that while they were leaving the meeting-place, the mob suddenly attacked them without any provocation.

"They had suddenly started assaulting us. Besides shouting 'Go Back BJP' slogan, they kicked us and beat us with sticks, rods and shoes," Dilip Ghosh told IBNS.

BJP leaders and activists somehow managed to escape from the area and took shelter at Sadar Police Station in Darjeeling's Chowk Bazar area.

"We are at Sadar Police Station now and I'm okay. But few of our activists got injured and they have been rushed to hospital," Ghosh added.

"This was a pre-planned attacked carried out by TMC and Bijoy Tamang's followers," Dilip Ghosh alleged. "Police provided us absolutely no security today and we did not spot a single policeman between Sadar Police Station and the spot where we were attacked."

BJP leaders said that a complaint has been lodged at the  local police station while the party's central leadership has been informed about the incident.

"We have lodged police complaint against 'unidentified' attackers as we could not recognize them. There are enough footage and pictures, using which police can identify the miscreants if they want," Dilip Ghosh said.

Police said that a probe into the incident has been started

"We received a complaint and have initiated investigation into the matter," a local police official told IBNS.

Meanwhile, TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee accused BJP leaders for the incident.

"Peace has been restored in Darjeeling hills and BJP leaders went there with an agenda to trigger tension again," Partha Chatterjee said. "Dilip Ghosh and other BJP leaders are responsible for today's incident."

Darjeeling witnessed violent unrest over strikes by the GJM in past few months and on Sep 26 GJM called off the 'indefinite' shut down in the hills after 104 days following the appeal of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
