BJP-Akali combine sweeps Chandigarh civic polls, Amit Shah says people's thumbs up to demonetisation

Chandigarh, Dec 20 (IBNS) : Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, the ruling BJP – Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance on Tuesday swept the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls, winning 21 out of the 26 wards in the Municipal elections.

According to reports, the  Congress secured only four seats, while Independent candidates could manage to win only one ward.

Among the prominent figures who won the elections were BJP Mayor Arun Sood and Congress leader Devinder Singh Babla.

After the thumping victory, , BJP President Amit Shah said that every success aftre Novermber eight shows people’s support for demonetisation drive.

“Thank people of Chandigarh for supporting BJP, every election win after Nov 8 shows that they approve of demonetisation decision,” he said.

In the outgoing house, the BJP-SAD held  12 seats, the Congress 11 and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party two.
For the ruling combine which has been in power in Punjab for ten years, the civic poll victory comes as a big morale booster as it virtually negates any anti-incumbency factor coming  their way in the Assembly polls. They have  reasons to smile more because the civic polls results overrule any atmosphere of people's resentment against  Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ban on 500 and 1,000-rupee notes aimed at eliminating corruption and black money.
