Bihar Legislator, former parliamentarians sent to jail for murder bid

Patna, June 4 (IBNS) A legislator and two former parliamentarians from Bihar have been sentenced to jail a trial court found them guilty of attempting to murder some policemen.

Reports said BJP lawmaker Ram Naresh Yadav and former parliamentarians Nawal Kishore Rai of Janata Dal(U) and Mohd Anwarul Haq of the RJD  have been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

Eleven other people accused in the case have also been given similar punishment.

The case dates back to 1998, when  Rai , Haq, and Yadav had led a protest at the Sitamarhi collectorate over inadequate relief for flood victims.

The demonstration turned violent as the mob ran amok to attack  the policemen.

The police opened fire, in which five people were killed.

A case was filed against the politicians and others for attacking government servants on duty. The policemen were charged with using excessive force.

An inquiry later cleared the policemen.

But when the government moved the Patna High Court a year ago to withdraw case against the politicians, the court threw out the appeal and asked the trial court  in Sitamarhi to expedite the case.
