Bihar CM Nitish Kumar wants a debate on Uniform Civil Code before replying to Centre's questionnaire
The state government made its stand clear at a meeting of the State Cabinet held on Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The state government’s stand comes after the Union law ministry sent a 16-point questionnaire seeking the former's views over UCC.
“After a review of the issue, the cabinet was of the opinion that the matter has not been discussed or debated at any of the communities or groups which operate under separate civil till now,” additional secretary, cabinet, UN Pandey was quoted as saying in English daily Hindustan Times on Wednesday.
“Since none of the religious streams have advocated for change or amendments in practices governing marriages, divorce, succession, or right to property rules, the decisions on various points related to possibility of introducing UCC cannot be arrived at without knowing views of stakeholders,” the cabinet note by state law department said.
The development comes amid growing bonhomie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Kumar.
