Bihar: Additional district magistrate arrested taking Rs 4 lakh bribe

Patna, Sept 9 (The Bihar Post/IBNS): A senior official in Bihar was arrested late Thursday night while taking a bribe of Rs 4 lakh.

This is the first arrest of any official caught with such huge bribe money in Bihar.

The additional district magistrate Maharshi Ram was arrested from his official residence in Nawada district.

Acting on a tip-off the official was seeking bribe in lieu of passing order in land mutation case, the vigilance sleuths laid a trap and caught the officer red-handed. He was taking bribe from one Hira Lal, a cloth merchant.

“Initially, he (the arrested officer) had sought Rs 5 lakh as bribe but finally the deal was settled for Rs 4.50 lakh. We caught him while accepting the first installment of the bribe,” a senior vigilance official Jamiruddin told the media today.

The police also recovered three liquor bottles from his residence during the raid for which a separate case was registered against him.

Earlier in July, the vigilance sleuths had arrested an IAS officer Jitendra Gupta while taking a bribe of Rs 80,000 on his first posting in Kaimur district. He was subsequently sent to jail.

The ruling Nitish Kumar government in Bihar has launched a crackdown on the corruption.

According to an official report, more than 800 public servants have been arrested in trap cases since 2006.
