Kolkata/IBNS: Fuelling speculations over his joining in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), rebel Trinamool Congress leader Rajib Banerjee on Friday resigned as the West Bengal MLA from Domjur, causing more trouble to the ruling party just few weeks ahead of the state polls.

Banerjee, who was seen coming out of the assembly with his party supremo Mamata Banerjee's portrait, said, "I have officially resigned as the MLA today. I thank the Speaker for cooperating with me for the last 10 years."

"I also thank my party supremo Mamata Banerjee for giving me an opportunity to become an MLA. She is like a mother-figure to me," he said.

Responding to a question on whether he would switch to the BJP, Banerjee, who had resigned as the Forest Minister of West Bengal a week ago, said, "Let's see. I will inform you about it tomorrow."

Interestingly, Union Home Minister and BJP strongman Amit Shah will be in the state for a two-day visit from Friday night.

Several media reports claim several current or former Trinamool MLAs will join the BJP in presence of Shah on Sunday.
