Kolkata/IBNS: Days before the third phase of West Bengal assembly polls, BJP candidate in Diamond Harbour, Deepak Haldar, was allegedly attacked and assaulted by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers during an election campaign in Parulia's Haridevpur area on Friday morning, reports said.

Former Diamond Harbour TMC MLA Deepak Haldar, who recently joined the BJP and is contesting in this election from the same assembly seat, has been admitted to Diamond Harbour Super Speciality Hospital.

BJP claimed that 10 of its workers were also injured in the attack which had taken place hours before TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's roadshow in Diamond Harbour.

Following the incident, BJP workers have blocked Diamond Harbour Hospital Mor and they are staging a demonstration there.

A heavy police force along with Central paramilitary forces have reached the scene.

Local police have started an investigation into the case while TMC has denied its involvement in the matter.
