Bengal Polls 2021: Mamata Banerjee to file nomination from Nandigram today

Kolkata/Haldia/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will Wednesday file her nomination in Haldia for her electoral battle with her former lieutenant and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Suvendu Adhikari in the Nandigram constituency.

Banerjee, who took the challenge of contesting Adhikari in his bastion, reached Nandigram Tuesday, addressed her workers, visited religious places and also caught media glare by preparing and serving tea at a tea stall.

The Trinamool supremo will visit a temple Wednesday, then hold a roadshow at 2 pm and then drive to Haldia to file her nomination an hour later.

Adhikari, who was once a trusted soldier of Banerjee, will also hold a roadshow in Nandigram, which has turned out to be the epicentre of the West Bengal elections 2021.

Adhikari, who led the Trinamool's 2007 Nandigram land movement which catapulted Banerjee to assume power in 2011, jumped to the BJP in Dec 2020. Ever since joining, the BJP leader targeted the Chief Minister giving a call to uninstall the present government through the elections.

In a bid to counter the BJP's alleged religious polarisation, Banerjee Tuesday asked her adversary not to play the Hindu card as people can't be divided on the basis of religion.

Banerjee said, "I will hold two rallies in two blocks. Some people will say 70/30 (divide people on the basis of Hindu and Muslim respectively). But we are for 100 per cent people. People can’t be divided like that."

"Don’t come to play Hindu card with me. First they should prove themselves as Hindus. They should participate in a competition with me over Hinduism," she added.
