Bangladesh: Photographer Shahidul Alam freed from prison

Dhaka, Nov 20 (IBNS): Ending his over three-month-long imprisonment, Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam walked out of a prison in Dhaka city on Tuesday.

He walked out from the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj around 8:20pm, local media reports said.

"Earlier on November 15, Shahidul Alam obtained permanent bail from the High Court. The High Court granted him permanent bail considering his age and the time he spent behind bars," reported The Daily Star.

The award-winning photographer was picked up by the detective branch of police on Aug 5 and kept in detention a day after he gave an interview to Al Jazeera, criticising the Government for its role in tackling the students' protest against road rage in Bangladesh.

According to media reports, a case was filed against him under Information and Communication Technology Act.

Who is Shahidul Alam?

Alam is a Bangladeshi photojournalist, teacher and social activist.  He founded the Drik Picture Library in 1989, the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Dhaka in 1998 which had a played a crucial role in training photojournalists over the years.

He also founded the Chobi Mela International Photography Festival in 1999.

Alam's photographs have been published in global newspapers and magazines in the world.
