Azam Khan apologises for his 'sexist' remark on BJP MP Rama Devi
New Delhi, July 29 (IBNS): After receiving massive rebuke from the parliamentarians, Samajwadi Party (SP)'s Lok Sabha MP Azam Khan has apologised for his "sexist" remark on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Rama Devi, media reports said.
Khan had passed the comment at a time Rama Devi was in the Speaker's chair in absence of Om Birla.
Rama Devi, who had earlier said she would never forgive Khan, on Monday said the SP leader has hurt both women and men of the country.
In a meeting of floor leaders of all parties chaired by the Lok Sabha Speaker, it was decided last week that Khan should apologise or face action.
Khan stirred the controversy on Thursday by making the "sexist" remark at the then officiating Speaker Rama Devi.
Rama Devi along with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) lawmakers had asked Khan to apologise but he addressed Rama Devi as his "sister".
SP president Akhilesh Yadav, who was sitting next to Khan, defended his colleague and lashed out at the BJP calling the saffron outfit as 'badtameez'.
Speaker Birla, who was presiding at the time, told Akhilesh it was Azam who needed to apologise for using an unparliamentary word.
On Friday, all parties unanimously condemned the sexist remark and urged the Speaker to take action against Khan.
The recent controversy takes back to the days during the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 when Khan had made a sexist remark on BJP candidate Jaya Prada.
