Atishi chosen Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Atishi was chosen as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly on Sunday.

This is the first time a woman has been chosen for the crucial role.

A woman Leader of the Opposition will take on a female CM for the first time in the history of the Assembly.

"The AAP will raise the strong voice of opposition in the house," Atishi said during a press conference.

Atishi became the Chief Minister of the national capital in September last year after Arvind Kejriwal quit the position following his release from prison on bail in the liquor policy scam.

Atishi wins despite AAP's poor show

Despite her party's poor show in the polls, Atishi won the Kalkaji seat by beating BJP's Ramesh Biduri, marking the only silver lining for the political outfit amid its dismal performance for the first time in the Delhi Assembly polls.

The AAP won just 22 seats this time in comparison to 62 seats clinched in Delhi in 2020.

Top AAP leaders, including chief Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia, lost their seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power by winning 48 seats in the first major elections in the country since the 2024 general polls which marked the return of the saffron brigade for the third straight term.
