Patna, Oct 4 (IBNS): At least 29 of those killed in a stampede after Dussehra celebration in Patna have been identified so far, media reports said.

As many as 33 people, including women and children, were killed and 28 injured in a stampede at the landmark Gandhi Maidan on Friday evening. The incident took place in a narrow road outside the sprawling ground as people were coming back after watching Dussehra celebrations.

More than 50,000 people gathered at the park to witness the burning of Ravana’s effigy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi over telephone and reviewed the situation arising out of the stampede.

"The Prime Minister has condoled the loss of lives in the incident. He has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the critically injured, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund,” the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also condoled the loss of lives in the incident.

Meanwhile, a group of angry locals attacked and damaged nearly half a dozen vehicles at the Ramghulam square near Gandhi Maidan on Saturday, forcing the police to resort to baton charge to quell the irate crowd.
