Guwahati, May 22 (IBNS) : While laying foundation stone of Mini ISBT and also ceremonially flagging off 20 new buses for better connectivity with upper and northern Assam at Khanapara in Guwahati on Monday, Assam Chief Minister Sonowal termed ASTC as the symbol of Assamese identity and to bring back the glory days of the Corporation both the civil society and the Government must work hand in hand so that ASTC can contribute meaningfully to the State’s economy.

The Assam CM also distributed official vehicles to DTOs for facilitating better working environment.

Saying that ASTC has been successful in reducing the deficit gap to Rs 4.5 crore through streamlining it s services and plugging the leakage in revenue collection, Sonowal stated ASTC must make all efforts to achieve transition from a loss making venture to profit making venture and for that the officials and staff of the Corporation will have to work dedicatedly and sincerely.

Stating that roads have been improved in the villages of the state under schemes like PMGSY and buses must ply to all villages in the next few years which would tremendously improve connectivity of interior places, Sonowal said modern buses will only be successful when the people consider them as their own property and thereby help in keeping them clean.

He also urged the ASTC staff to keep the buses in good condition for maintaining their longevity.

Sonowal reiterated that the ASTC is not only for profit making but it also needs to carry the message of Swach Bharat to the remotest corner of the state through its clean and proper maintenance of the modern buses.

He also remarked that DTOs must be accessible to the public and they must stay away from corrupt practices so that transparent public service can be provided.

It is to be mentioned that ASTC has taken many steps like use of information technology for monitoring and managing breakdown of buses, rent collection etc, training and capacity building of workshop workers and other such initiatives which are expected to provide momentum to the growth of the Corporation.

Minister of Transport Chandramohan Patowary also spoke on the occasion and said that ASTC’s fortunes will be turned around through hardwork and dedication and said that corrupt practices will be rooted out as some strict decisions might also be taken in the interest of the Cooperation but employees must support such initiatives.

Dispur MLA Atul Bora, Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Chief Secreatry V.K.Pipersenia, Commissioner and Secretary Transport Department Ashutosh Agnihotri, Managing Director ASTC A.P. Tiwari were also present on the occasion among others.
