Assam:Political, non-political organizations, ethnic groups protest against Centre's decision to revise Citizenship (Amendment) Act

Dozens of political, non-political organizations, ethnic groups of the state protested against the Modi government’s decision to revise the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and fear that the Centre’s decision would result in the marginalization of the indigenous people of Assam.

On Monday, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the indigenous people of the state would be affected for the Centre’s decision.

“Modi government’s decision to revise the Citizenship (Amendment) Act had violated the Assam Accord and we will not allow it,” Tarun Gogoi said.

The former Assam CM further said that the Congress will move to the Supreme Court against the Centre’s decision.

On the other hand, All Assam Students Union (AASU) said to revise the Citizenship Act Modi government want to give Citizenship to over 30 lakh hindu Bangladeshis.

“We will not take any more burden. AASU and other indigenous organizations protested against the Centre’s decision,” AASU Advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said.

Over the issue the student organization had announced a series of protest programme.

On October 18, the student organization has organized a candlelight protest across the state and would to hold a public meeting in Guwahati on Oct 22 to chalk out the future course of action.

Meanwhile, Axom Unnayan Samiti had burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati on Monday protest over the issue.
