Assam Rs 700 crore scam : CID arrests three Agriculture department engineers

Guwahati, Mar 7 (IBNS): The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police on Wednesday arrested three Agriculture department engineers in connection with a multi-crore rupees scam.

A top official of Assam Police CID said the engineers of the state Agriculture department were arrested after their involvement were found during interrogation.

The arrested officials were identified as Jayanta Sarma (Executive Engineer), Bhaskar Jyoti Das (Assistant Executive Engineer) and Mukul Chandra Deb (Junior Engineer).

The CID official said that investigating officer arrested them after their alleged involvement in the Rs 700 crore scam was found.

“Investigation pointed to their involvement in anomalies relating to distribution of tractors, power tillers, other agricultural equipment among beneficiaries,” the top CID official said.

CID has registered a case 56/14 under section 120(B)/420/406 of IPC and R/W section 13(1)(C)(2) of PC Act in connection with the scam which was placed during the previous Congress led state government.

Earlier, the Agriculture department officers were grilled by a CID team for several hours.

Last year, CID had arrested five officials of the state Agriculture department and three contractors in connection with the scam.

The arrested officials and contractors were identified as Dr Birendranath Sarmah (District Agriculture Officer, Jorhat), Lakheswar Gum (Assistant Executive Engineer, Gohpur, Sonitpur), Dilip Baruah (Executive Engineer (WM) Khanapara, Guwahati), Rohit Bharali (Junior Engineer, Nagaon), Ranbir Kakati (Executive Engineer, Nagaon) and three contractors Dipul Barman, Gautam Bhattacharjee and Kamakhya Agarwala.

The investigating agency had also grilled former state Agriculture director Kabindra Borkakty and former Chief Engineer Tibra Baruah for their alleged involvement into the scam.
