Guwahati, Jan 17 (IBNS): Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, Assam police has received a major threat from several insurgent groups from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

The insurgency threat came much bigger after suspected militants of NSCN (K) and ULFA (I) on Tuesday evening set ablaze 9 crude-oil laden tankers at Namchik area near Jagun in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district along with Arunachal Pradesh border.

Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay said that, militancy problem has been gradually reduced in Assam soil, but threat still comes from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland sides.

“Several insurgent groups have taken shelter in the neighbouring states, which become major threat for the state,” DGP Sahay said.

The top Assam cop further said that, massive combing operations against the militants are going on in Assam and bordering areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland.

Meanwhile, Assam police alerted all district police to take appropriate security measures ahead of Republic Day celebrations.

Recently, the Union Home Ministry has asked the state government of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and other security agencies to launch massive hunting operation against the militants in the concerned states.

Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland shares border with Mynmar and several banned outfits have set up base camps in the neighbouring country.

On the other hand, Assam police ADGP Dr RP Meena on Wednesday visited the site of Tinsukia district, where suspected militants torched 9 oil tankers.

ADGP Meena also took part in a high level security meeting with Tinsukia SP Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta.
