Assam police arrest a person with 5500 SIM cards, 20 mobile phones for online fraud

Guwahati, Sep 23 (IBNS): Assam police have arrested a person with more than 5500 mobile SIM cards and 20 mobile phones who looted cashback offer of different online shopping companies and diverted the amount to his Paytm account.

Police had arrested the man identified as Saiful Islam from his house at Saharia village under Moirabari police station in Assam’s Morigaon district.

Police had also recovered more than 5500 SIM cards and 20 mobile phones in possession from him.

According to the reports, Saiful Islam used the SIM cards in the name of different persons for online shopping to get cashback offer, which was given by the companies for its first time user.

A police official of Moirabari police station said that – we had received an information that, a illegal business of selling SIM cards is continuing at Saharia village area and immediately launched operation and arrested the person with more than 5500 SIM cards and 20 mobile phones.

“We came to know about the online fraud after the person revealed it during interrogation,” the police officer said.

The Assam cop said that, "When a person submitted his documents for getting a SIM card, Saiful had used the same documents and collected SIM cards from different mobile companies without knowledge of that person."

“He used the SIM card of that particular person for online shopping to get cashback offer as a first time user and diverted the amount to his Paytm account. He had also sold the OTP numbers and looted lakks of rupees by committing this cyber crime,” the police officer said.

The police official further said that apart from Saiful, there is a gang involved in the online fraud.

“We have launched operation to crack down the gang and arrest the persons,” the police officer said. 

Meanwhile, police had produced the man before the court and taken 14-day remand.
