Assam plans to restrict Bangladeshi elephant’s movement along Indo-Bangladesh border
Guwahati, Sept 9 (IBNS): After keeping strict vigil to check infiltrators along the Indo-Bangladesh border, India is now planning to restrict the Bangladeshi elephant’s movement along the bordering areas.
Assam’s Karimganj district administration has taken an innovative plan along the bordering areas to prevent elephant movement from Bangladesh side to India after a group of wild jumbos of Bangladesh have been wreaking havoc at various areas in the bordering district.
The administration of Karimganj district is now planning to plant lemon trees and ‘bhut jolokia’ (ghost chilli) in the elephant corridor of the bordering areas.
According to the reports, over 300 meters of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj district side have been opened for elephant movement as these areas known as elephant corridor.
But the elephants have entered into India and wreaked havoc in the bordering areas of Karimganj district.
The wild jumbos had killed several people and destroyed paddy fields, tea gardens and also border fencing.
On Sunday, a team of Karimganj district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Talukdar had visited the bordering areas and took stock the situation.
Pradip Kumar Talukdar, Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj district said that, elephant movement along the bordering areas continued since long period.
“The wild jumbos used a specific route for movement and jumbos destroyed border fencing to enter into India from Bangladesh. In view of this point, around 300 meter bordering areas have been completely opened only for elephant movement. But the wild elephants wreaked havoc in the bordering areas of Karimganj district, killed several people, destroyed houses, tea gardens. So we are planning to restrict their movement in Bangladesh by planting lemon and bhut jolokia trees along the bordering areas,” the Karimganj DC said.
