Assam Panchayat election: AGP refuses BJP’s proposal for pre-poll alliance
Guwahati, Nov 12 (IBNS): The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has refused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP’s) proposal for pre-poll alliance in the state Panchayat elections to be held in two phases on Dec 5 and 9.
The BJP and AGP will go alone in the Panchayat polls in Assam.
Both parties have taken the decision during a crucial meeting held in Guwahati in the presence of top leaders of the ally parties of the state government.
The meeting was held at the office of Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Janata Bhawan, Dispur in presence of few BJP and AGP leaders.
Earlier, Assam BJP unit president Ranjit Kumar Dass and other top leaders of the saffron party said that, BJP will go alone but the party took a ‘U-turn’ following present political scenario in the state and proposed a pre-poll alliance to its ally party AGP.
However, the AGP on Monday refused to the proposal.
AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita said that, AGP is the ally party of the BJP-led Assam government, but his party will fight alone in the Panchayat polls.
“BJP has offered us to make a pre-poll alliance in the Panchayat elections. But we can’t accept it. AGP has already decided to fight alone and the decision was taken by the party leaders, workers. We will see about post-poll alliance,” the AGP MLA said.
Recently, the top leaders of the regional party announced that AGP will not make any pre-poll alliance with any party and will go alone in the Panchayat polls.
On the other hand, a top leader of BJP’s Assam unit, who does not want to disclose his identity said that, the saffron party has gradually lost its grip in the state following the Citizenship Amendment Bill row and other issues.
Even, several candidates also refused to contest in the Panchayat polls in BJP ticket.
“Our leaders delivered various comments about the party strength, but the reality is vast difference. Earlier, many people came to contest in BJP ticket, but today they are refusing to it,” the BJP leader said.
Massive protests are continuing in Assam against the Citizenship Bill proposed by the BJP-led NDA government aiming to grant Indian citizenship to the non-Muslims refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
