The state government employees in Assam have been offered a half-day special leave to watch director Vivek Agnihotri's film The Kashmir Files, which is based on the true event of the exodus of Kashmir Pandits from the erstwhile northern state in 1990.

The employees will have to inform the superiors for the leave and submit the film ticket the next day, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma tweeted, "Glad to announce that our Govt employees will be entitled for half-day special leave to watch #TheKashmirFiles. They will have to only inform their superior officers and submit the tickets the next day."

Several Indian states, all governed by the country's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Tripura have announced the film, where veteran actor Anupam Kher plays the lead role of a pandit, tax-free.

Endorsing the film, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said films like The Kashmir Files should be made to make people aware of the truth.

Speaking at the BJP parliamentary party meeting in Delhi, Modi took a swipe at the critics of the films and said that they are furious because the Anupam Kher starrer reveals the truth that was deliberately kept hidden.

Modi slammed the critics of the film and said there has been a "conspiracy" to discredit the same.
