Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the Popular Front of India (PFI) was involved on Thursday’s violence during an eviction drive in Assam’s Darrang district.

Two people killed in police firing and many others including 11 police personnel injured in clash between protesters and security forces that broke out at Dholpur area under Sipajhar assembly constituency in Darrang district on Thursday and visuals of the violence sparked nationwide outrage.

“The state government has very clear intelligence report that from the poor and landless families certain people have collected Rs 28 lakh during last three months saying that we are going to convince the government and there will be no eviction. We have those names. When they couldn’t resist the eviction drive, they mobilized those people and created havoc on that particular day. We have name of six people with clear intelligence that Rs 28 lakh was collected. Apart from that, prior to the day of incident in the name of carrying food articles to the evicted families PFI visited the site,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

"The state government is inquiring the matter details. Eviction was done against 60 families, but where fro these 10,000 families have come. I think once Judicial inquiry starts we will get lot of more explosive information,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He also said that, the Assam government has already sent a dossier to the Union government seeking total ban on PFI.

“On the point of CAA investigation PFI state president was arrested for three months and thereafter the court had given him bail. The Assam government has already sent a dossier to the centre seeking total ban on PFI. So whatever the Assam government has need to do against PFI we are doing,” the Assam Chief Minister said.

The Assam Chief Minister said before eviction drive he held meetings with All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) two times.
