Asom Gana Parishad threatens to withdraw support from Assam govt if Citizenship Bill is passed
Guwahati, Oct 23 (IBNS): Opposing the BJP’s ‘Hindutva Design’, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally party of BJP-led Assam government, on Tuesday declared that the party will withdraw their support from the government if the Citizenship Amendment Bill is passed in the Parliament.
Protest against the bill, which aims to grant Indian citizenship to the non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, AGP on Tuesday took out a massive protest rally in Guwahati and raised slogans against BJP’s move.
Former Chief Minister of Assam and senior leader of the party Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that, his party will withdraw support from the government for interest of the Assam and people of the Assamese society.
AGP president and Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora said that, if the bill (Citizenship Amendment Bill) is passed, then his party will break the alliance.
“At present, AGP is the part of the government, because that is people’s mandate. We honoured the mandate of the people. We are fighting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. We are observing the present scenario. Since the central government was pressing hard, we left for Delhi and met the JPC chairman and other members and asked them to visit Assam again to collect more reports. If the bill is passed, we will break the alliance,” Atul Bora said.
The protest rally started from Latasil playground in Guwahati to the Chandmari area.
