Arunachal students' body to launch cleansing drive to oust 'undocumented migrants'
Itanagar, Aug 2 (IBNS): Following the publish of the final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC), the apex students' body in Arunachal Pradesh is set to launch a cleansing drive to oust "undocumented migrants" living in the state, media reports said.
Fearing that more than four million people who did not find places in Assam's NRC might enter Arunachal, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) said it would launch an "Operation Clean Drive".
Last week, the Arunachal government launched a drive in various districts of the state to identify people without necessary permits.
The AAPSU has urged the state government to come out with a strong "anti-influx" measures.
The second and final draft of Assam's NRC, which was released on July 30, left out over four million people, triggering a massive political controversy.
The ruling BJP faced wrath from several opposition parties with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the saffron outfit of leading to a situation of "civil war and bloodbath".
However, the Congress, the principal opposition party of the country, said it does not approve of Mamata's comment on the NRC.
The Congress said all political parties should react responsiblly to this sensitive issue.
The Assam Accord (1985) was signed between the Government of India led by Rajiv Gandhi and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on 15 August 1985 after a six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
