Port Blair/UNI: There has been a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases all over the country. Of late, Andaman and Nicobar Islands too are witnessing a sudden rise in the number of COVID positive cases.

To ensure that there is no dearth of materials required for containment of COVID19 virus in A&N Islands considering the fact that most of the materials come from the mainland, the local Administration has directed the Health Department of Andaman to procure materials and equipment in adequate quantity.

Thankfully, a large quantity of essential materials like PPE Kits (100000), goggles (100000), face maskN95 (200000), disposable face mask (300000), face shield (9000), disposable shoe cover (27000 pairs), hand gloves (200000 pairs), etc. have now been supplied by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI through HLL Company, free of cost, which would have cost the exchequer of UT Administration an amount of Rs. 13.71 crores.

Meanwhile, the A&N Administration has urged the people of A&N Islands to strictly follow COVID appropriate behaviour viz. wearing of a mask and maintaining social distancing to protect themselves and their family from the deadly virus.

Soliciting the cooperation of the general public in the fight against the pandemic and to bring down the number of positive cases in the Islands, the Secretary Andaman’s Information and Publicity Division, Mr. Sunil Kumar Singh today said that non adherence to COVID appropriate behaviour will prompt the Administration to take a tough stand.

“Number of COVID-19 cases has gone up substantially. If the public does not follow COVID-19 protocol, Administration will have no other options than taking stricter measures, like it was taken last year,” Mr. Singh added.

He said that the measure might include stopping all fights or reducing the number of flights, shutting down hotels and shops.

As many as 38 new cases have been detected in South Andaman yesterday in taking a total number of active cases to 106.

Till now, 5247 people have been tested positive in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, of them 5078 have recovered while 63 deaths have been reported till now in the Union Territory.
