Amit Shah promises UCC, ₹3,000 aid per month for women and youth in BJP’s Bengal manifesto

Kolkata/IBNS: Religion-based personal laws will be scrapped in West Bengal if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday.

Launching the party’s manifesto, titled ‘Sankalpa Patra’, Amit Shah said the government would implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

Other major promises include ₹3,000 monthly financial assistance for women and youth.

The proposed aid is being seen as a counter to the Trinamool Congress’ welfare schemes such as Lakshmir Bhandar for women and Yuva Sathi for youth, which have played a significant role in the ruling party's growing popularity.

Notably, the BJP’s promised amount is double the benefits offered under these schemes.

What is Uniform Civil Code?

The Uniform Civil Code refers to a single set of personal laws that would apply to all citizens of India, irrespective of religion.

What does it cover?

It governs civil matters such as:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Inheritance
  • Adoption
  • Succession

Outlining the party’s poll agenda, Shah announced several welfare and governance measures:

  • Development of a business park in Singur
  • Eviction of illegal immigrants
